What is Shot Peening? Benefits Process Why Cut Wire Shot? Industries FAQ

What is Shot Peening?

Shot peening is a mechanical surface enhancement process where small spherical media particles (cut wire shot) are projected at high velocity onto the surface of a component.

Each impact creates a small indentation that plastically deforms the surface layer, generating compressive residual stresses that improve fatigue strength, stress corrosion resistance and overall component performance.

Before Peening
Tensile Stress (Micro-Cracks)
After Peening
Compressive Stress (Tough Shield)
BENEFITS OF SHOT PEENING

ENHANCED FATIGUE LIFE

Introducing compressive residual stresses to significantly increase fatigue strength.

IMPROVED STRESS CORROSION RESISTANCE

Components perform better in corrosive environments and resist stress related failures.

BETTER WEAR RESISTANCE

Improves surface hardness and resistance to wear for moving components.

INCREASED COMPONENT RELIABILITY

Critical components perform consistently under cyclic loading conditions.

REDUCED MAINTENANCE COSTS

Longer service life results in lower maintenance requirements and reduced downtime.

IMPROVED SURFACE INTEGRITY

Enhances surface condition without compromising dimensional accuracy.

SHOT PEENING PROCESS

1

COMPONENT INSPECTION

Parts are inspected before processing to ensure suitability.

2

MEDIA SELECTION

Appropriate cut wire shot is selected based on material, geometry and intensity.

3

PEENING OPERATION

Components are exposed to controlled streams of shot media at high velocity.

4

COVERAGE VERIFICATION

Coverage percentage is measured to verify complete and uniform treatment.

5

ALMEN TESTING

Intensity is verified using Almen strips to ensure process consistency.

6

QUALITY CONTROL

Finished components undergo final inspection and are approved for delivery.
